Essential Operating and Safety Skills
We provide a one-day course in all matters realting to the safe operation of muzzle loading cannon.
The course covers the following:
- The history of cannon, black powder and salute firing
- The licensing requirements of muzzle loading firearms and explosives
- The Risk Assessment process
- The types of cannon and their suitability for use
- Manufacturing safety and proof requirements
- The equipment required and the sourcing of materiel
- Safe operation – planning, preparation and drills on the gun.
- Initiation methods and their appropriate selelction
- Safe managment of the unexpected.
The course is taught using both classroom and hands-on methods. Successful completion of the course (includes written and practical tests) leads to a competence certificate.
Simon West has decades of experience in artillery and explosive systems. He is a registered firearms dealer, past Army weapons staff officer and instructor. The course is run in Wiltshire.
